A useful self-tan routine starts with the product you actually own. Application and development instructions vary, so build your plan from that label rather than copying a universal ten-minute drying rule.
1. Check the intended area
Confirm where the product can be used. Do not apply leftover body product to the face just to avoid waste. Follow any eye and lip restrictions carefully.
2. Read the preparation instructions
Check whether the product directs any preparation and when. Do not automatically combine a scrub, acids and a new tanner in the same session because a generic routine lists them together.
3. Check the amount and tool
Some instructions call for a particular applicator. Follow the product's method rather than assuming every cream can be applied without a mitt or that every format needs one.
4. Plan the waiting and washing time
Read the stated time before dressing, bathing or rinsing. Leave enough room in your schedule, and follow its advice about avoiding transfer. No single wait time applies to every tanner.
5. Keep sun protection separate
A cosmetic tan does not establish SPF protection. The FDA's sunless-tanner guide explains the distinction.
A note on product recommendations
The older HKY tanning-butter reference is not verified in the current catalog. This checklist therefore stays product-neutral. It does not promise a streak-free result, identify an unverified formula or recommend an HKY moisturizer to extend a tan.
Keep your product's instructions with you until the full application and development process is finished. That makes follow-up questions easier to answer accurately.
