Summer Color and Sun Protection: What Tanning Products Do

A bronzed look and protection from ultraviolet exposure are separate goals. A product described as tanning butter, oil or a glow enhancer should not be assumed to protect your skin. Read the actual label rather than relying on the product name or scent.

A tan does not prove safe exposure

The FDA explains that UV tanning carries risks. Sunscreen does not turn deliberate tanning into a risk-free activity, and avoiding a visible burn does not mean the exposure caused no harm.

Decide whether you want color or sun protection

Your goal What to check
Temporary cosmetic color Look at bronzer instructions, shade and removal method.
A sunless tanned appearance Read the self-tanner directions and areas to avoid.
Outdoor protection Choose appropriate sunscreen, clothing and shade; do not infer SPF from a glow product.

FDA guidance notes that sunless tanning color alone does not provide sunscreen protection. For sunscreen selection, the AAD recommends broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher.

Before a beach day

  • Check that you have enough sunscreen to use as its label directs.
  • Pack a hat, suitable clothing and a plan for shade.
  • Keep cosmetic color products separate from the products you rely on for protection.
  • Read reapplication instructions, including what to do after swimming or sweating.

This article does not recommend an HKY tanning butter: a current corresponding product and SPF claim have not been established here. Do not use an older blog mention as a substitute for a present-day product label. Choose the look you enjoy while making your sun-protection decisions independently.
